The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will act as a constructive opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly following the April 2024 elections.
This shift in political alignment follows a fragmented election result that prevents any single party from holding absolute power, forcing potential new coalitions in the state.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-politician Vijay, won 108 seats in the assembly election held on April 23, 2024 [1]. While this represents a significant gain for the party, it remains short of the 115-seat threshold required for a majority in the 234-member assembly [2].
To bridge this gap, Vijay has sought potential allies to form a government. He said he was meeting Governor Arlekar to discuss the formation of the government [3]. Other parties, including the VCK and Congress, have hinted at providing backing to the TVK to secure a stable administration [4].
M.K. Stalin, leading the DMK, has dismissed the attacks from the TVK. Stalin said, "Criticising DMK is the entry route to politics" [5]. Despite the tension between the two parties, the DMK has opted for a supportive role as the opposition rather than attempting to lead the current coalition.
Stalin has also maintained a critical stance toward national parties. During a campaign launch in Tiruvarur, he said, "BJP has no heart to offer Tamil Nadu" [6]. This positioning suggests the DMK intends to focus on regional interests while the TVK negotiates the terms of its new government.
“"Criticising DMK is the entry route to politics."”
The emergence of the TVK as a major legislative force disrupts the traditional bipolarity of Tamil Nadu politics. By opting for a 'constructive opposition' role, the DMK is avoiding a direct confrontation with a popular new entrant while waiting for the TVK's coalition-building efforts to either stabilize or falter, potentially positioning itself for a return to power in the next cycle.
