Medical experts are warning against a viral social media trend called "tanmaxxing" that encourages excessive sunlight exposure to achieve a dark tan.

The trend is significant because it promotes prolonged UV exposure among young people, which dermatologists said can lead to permanent skin damage and life-threatening malignancies.

Participants in the trend primarily use TikTok and other short-form video platforms in the US and Europe to share their progress. The goal is to achieve the darkest tan possible for aesthetic reasons, often by spending hours outdoors without adequate protection.

Doctors said there was a sharp rise in the trend during May and June 2026 [1]. This surge in popularity has prompted health professionals to speak out about the dangers of intentional over-exposure to the sun.

"Tanmaxxing can increase your risk of skin cancer because it encourages prolonged UV exposure," Dr. Alok Patel said.

Medical professionals said they are concerned that the social-media nature of the trend gamifies sun exposure. By framing the pursuit of a dark tan as "maxxing" — a term often used in online communities to describe maximizing a specific physical trait — users may ignore the biological warnings of the skin.

"People are chasing the darkest tan possible, but they don’t realize they’re essentially sun‑bathing for hours each day," Ashan Singh said.

While some users may believe they are safe if they use minimal protection, dermatologists said that any tan is a sign of skin damage. The cumulative effect of the hours spent sun-bathing for the trend increases the likelihood of developing melanoma, and other skin cancers, later in life.

The rise of tanmaxxing reflects a broader pattern where aesthetic goals driven by algorithmic trends override established public health guidelines. By rebranding dangerous UV exposure as a form of self-improvement or 'maxxing,' the trend bypasses traditional health warnings, potentially leading to a spike in skin cancer cases among Gen Z and Alpha cohorts who are most active on these platforms.
