Dongshin University Launches Initiative to Combat Rural Population Decline

Dongshin University is implementing regional-customized talent development programs to counteract population decline in South Korea's rural areas.

This strategy shifts the university's focus from selective admissions based on academic scores to the growth of local leaders. By fostering a symbiotic ecosystem for youth employment and settlement, the institution aims to revitalize areas facing existential threats from dwindling populations.

As part of these initiatives, the university has worked to install solar panels in a rural experiential village. The residents of this village have an average age of 70 ^[1], highlighting the urgent need for sustainable infrastructure and the introduction of younger generations to the community.

Park Seong-il, the head of the university's planning office, said the institution has spent four years ^[2] focusing on the core essentials of student happiness and regional symbiosis.

"Over the past four years, Dongshin University has focused only on the essence of student happiness and regional coexistence," Park said. "We have achieved overwhelming educational innovation in employment rates, AI education innovation, and the attraction of international students, and have solidified the status of regional universities based on a strong financial foundation" ^[2].

These efforts include the creation of a local ecosystem designed to provide youth with viable career paths within their own regions. By integrating academic innovation with practical community support, such as the solar energy project, the university seeks to create a model where students can find professional success without migrating to major urban centers.
