A Durham Regional Police recruit died Tuesday morning after his vehicle collided with a transport truck near the Ontario Police College [1].
The incident underscores the inherent risks faced by law enforcement trainees even before completing their formal certification. The loss of a recruit during the training phase is a rare but devastating event for the regional police service.
Tyrone Magbitang, 27 [3], was a Constable in Training (CIT) with the Durham Regional Police. He and another CIT were traveling to the Ontario Police College for training when the collision occurred at approximately 11:20 a.m. [1, 2].
The crash took place in the Township of Malahide near Aylmer, approximately three km from the college [1, 2]. One person died at the scene [1], while the second recruit was critically injured [2].
"It is with profound sadness that we confirm the loss of Constable in Training Tyrone Magbitang," a Durham Regional Police spokesperson said [1].
Police said Magbitang was a compassionate, dedicated, and service-driven individual [3]. The spokesperson said that the department's thoughts are with his family and fellow officers during this difficult time [3].
Investigators are currently reviewing the circumstances that led to the collision with the transport truck. The identity of the second recruit has not been released.
“"It is with profound sadness that we confirm the loss of Constable in Training Tyrone Magbitang."”
This incident highlights the logistical vulnerabilities of recruits during the transit phase of their training. Because the collision occurred within three km of the Ontario Police College, the investigation will likely focus on local traffic patterns and the specific actions of the transport truck driver to determine if the crash was avoidable.
