Dutch Railways (NS) security officers began carrying short batons in Rotterdam on Aug. 3, 2025, to defend against increasing aggression [1].
The move signals a shift in how the national rail operator handles security, moving toward more visible physical deterrents as staff face more frequent violence. This change follows a trend of increasing volatility in public spaces across the Netherlands.
Buitengewoon opsporingsambtenaren, known as boa's, are now authorized to use the batons during incidents involving aggression [1, 3]. While the rollout began with two officers in Rotterdam [1], other reports indicate that 75 boa's are carrying the equipment as part of a trial [4].
The decision follows a documented increase in violence toward railway personnel. Reports of aggression rose from 1,095 in one year to 1,132 the following year [1].
Some officers have expressed a personal need for the equipment after experiencing physical assaults. Nick, a 33-year-old NS security officer, said he felt he needed something to defend himself after he was hit on the head during a ticket check [4].
Local officials have noted a broader societal trend toward hostility. Michel Bezuijen, the mayor of Zoetermeer, said the society is hardening [5].
However, the move has not been without criticism. Some observers have questioned whether providing security officers with weapons might actually provoke more aggression from the public [3].
“I actually want to have something with me to be able to defend myself.”
The deployment of batons by NS security officers reflects a growing tension between public service and safety in the Netherlands. By arming non-police officers with defensive weapons, the NS is attempting to mitigate the risk to its employees, but the move risks escalating confrontations in high-stress environments like train stations. This shift mirrors a wider European trend where frontline transport workers face increasing hostility, necessitating a reevaluation of security protocols and the legal boundaries of non-police enforcement.
