Enbridge Inc. has formed a joint venture with KKR & Co. Inc. and Apollo Global Management Inc. to expand a British Columbia pipeline [1].

The deal secures significant private equity backing to increase natural-gas capacity in Western Canada, addressing rising energy demands in the region.

The joint venture will invest approximately C$2.7 billion (US$1.95 billion) [1] into the Westcoast natural-gas pipeline system. As part of the agreement, KKR and Apollo have purchased a 29 percent equity stake in the pipeline network [2].

Funds from the partnership are designated for two specific infrastructure projects: the Aspen Point and Sunrise expansion programs [4]. These projects aim to increase the overall capacity of the Westcoast system to transport more natural gas [5].

The agreement was announced on Thursday, Aug. 27 [1]. By partnering with private-equity firms, Enbridge can distribute the financial burden of large-scale infrastructure growth while maintaining the operational momentum of its B.C. assets [3].

This investment follows a pattern of energy companies seeking strategic partnerships to fund capital-intensive projects. The Westcoast system serves as a critical artery for gas movement in British Columbia, and these expansions are intended to prevent bottlenecks as demand grows [5].

The joint venture will invest approximately C$2.7 billion (US$1.95 billion)

This partnership signals a continued reliance on private equity to fund traditional energy infrastructure despite the broader global transition toward renewables. By selling a minority stake to KKR and Apollo, Enbridge reduces its direct capital exposure while ensuring the Westcoast system can meet immediate regional demand for natural gas.
