A critically endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle named Rhos​si has returned to Texas after being rescued from a beach in Wales.

The return of Rhos​si marks a rare success in the conservation of one of the world's most endangered sea turtle species. Because Kemp's ridley turtles are primarily found in the Gulf of Mexico, the animal's presence in the United Kingdom was a significant anomaly that required an international rescue effort.

Rhossi first washed up on a beach in Anglesey, Wales, in 2023 [2]. At the time of the rescue, the turtle was described as being near death. Experts said the animal's age was five or six years [4].

Following the rescue, Rhos​si underwent a rehabilitation process that lasted more than two years [3]. This recovery period was essential to ensure the turtle was healthy enough to survive the transition back to its native environment. The process involved specialized care to stabilize the animal before its long-distance transport.

To facilitate the return, Rhos​si was flown 5,000 miles [1] from the United Kingdom back to the U.S. The journey ended in Texas, where the turtle was coordinated with the Houston Zoo for release into the Gulf of Mexico. This logistical feat ensured the turtle could be reintroduced to the specific waters where the species naturally thrives.
