The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is considering a first-ever England men's cricket tour of Nepal [1].
This potential visit marks a significant expansion of the game's global footprint, targeting a rising cricket nation to grow the sport's popularity beyond traditional strongholds. The move follows a competitive encounter between the two teams during the T20 World Cup in June 2024 [2].
Officials are currently weighing options to schedule a T20 International (T20I) series [1]. The tour is being discussed for inclusion in the 2027-31 Future Tours Programme (FTP) cycle [1]. If approved, the series would likely be hosted at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kathmandu [1].
"We are keen to explore the possibility of an England tour of Nepal as part of the next FTP, building on the excitement generated by the World Cup encounter," Richard Gould, ECB Chief Executive, said.
The ECB views the initiative as an opportunity to capitalize on the momentum generated by Nepal's performance against England in 2024 [1]. Such a tour would provide the English squad with a unique environment, and a chance to engage with one of the most passionate fanbases in the sport.
Local leadership has welcomed the prospect of the visit. "A tour would be a huge boost for Nepal cricket and would give our players exposure to top-level competition," Paras Khadka, President of the Cricket Association of Nepal, said.
While the specific dates and number of matches remain undecided, the focus remains on the 2027-31 window [1]. The ECB is evaluating the logistical requirements of playing in Kathmandu to ensure the series meets international standards.
“The ECB is considering a first-ever England men's cricket tour of Nepal.”
This proposed tour signals a shift in the ECB's strategy toward diversifying its schedule and supporting the growth of 'Associate' nations. By scheduling a high-profile series in Nepal, England can accelerate the professionalization of cricket in South Asia while expanding its own commercial and fan reach in a region where the sport is seeing rapid, organic growth.
