Equity Group awarded scholarships worth approximately Sh3 billion [2] to 121 East African scholars to study at universities worldwide on Monday.
The initiative aims to develop future leaders and increase access to higher education across the region. By funding global education for students from diverse backgrounds, the group seeks to bridge the gap in advanced academic opportunities within East Africa.
The funding, which totals roughly U.S.$23.4 million [2], was announced in Nairobi through the Equity Leaders Program. The recipients include students from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo [2].
Of the total recipients, 86 scholars are from Kenya [1] and 29 scholars are from Rwanda [1]. The program targets high-achieving students who lack the financial means to pursue degrees at international institutions.
Equity Bank operates the program as part of its broader social investment strategy. The group said the scholarships are intended to empower the next generation of African professionals to bring global expertise back to their home countries.
These awards cover various costs associated with studying abroad, including tuition, and living expenses. The program focuses on creating a network of leaders who can drive economic and social transformation across the East African community.
“Equity Group awarded scholarships worth approximately Sh3 billion to 121 East African scholars.”
This investment reflects a strategic move by one of Africa's largest financial institutions to cultivate a highly skilled professional class. By diversifying the nationalities of the scholars to include Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC, Equity Group is extending its influence and corporate social responsibility footprint beyond Kenya to establish a regional leadership pipeline.
