Rising temperatures across Europe are transforming wildfires from isolated incidents into a recurring threat, according to the Forest Stewardship Council.

This shift signals a critical need for urgent adaptation measures as climate change increases the vulnerability of European ecosystems. The intensification of heatwaves not only fuels fires but also reduces river flows, compounding the environmental crisis.

Dr. Subhra Bhattacharjee, Director General of the Forest Stewardship Council, said that areas previously considered safe now present new risks of wildfires. She said that these events will no longer be isolated occurrences but will instead remain a constant danger.

Recent data highlights the severity of the warming trend. During August, several regions of Europe experienced temperatures exceeding 40°C [1]. This follows a broader pattern of extreme heat; June was recorded as the second warmest June ever seen in Europe [3].

The trend began accelerating well before this year. In 2025, approximately 95% of Europe recorded annual temperatures that were above the average [2].

Bhattacharjee said that the current climate trajectory requires a fundamental change in how forests are managed. The combination of prolonged droughts and extreme heat has left the landscape primed for ignition, making traditional safety assumptions obsolete.

Environmental reports indicate that the reduction in river levels is a direct result of these prolonged heatwaves [4]. This lack of water further dries out forest floors, creating a feedback loop that increases the frequency and intensity of blazes across the continent.
