Calvin Butler, president and CEO of Exelon Corporation, said that AI data centers and summer cooling demand are straining the U.S. power grid.
This pressure on the electrical infrastructure threatens to increase the frequency of blackouts and drive residential energy costs higher for millions of consumers.
Exelon serves nearly 11 million customers [1] across the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest. Butler said the surge in AI-driven data centers, combined with increased demand for cooling during summer months, is pushing the existing grid to its limits. To address these vulnerabilities and fund necessary upgrades, utility companies across the country have requested more than $18 billion in rate hikes during the first half of the year [4].
Rising costs are already impacting households. The average monthly residential electric bill in the U.S. was $182 in 2024 [2]. By 2025, the average price per kilowatt-hour was 21% higher than 2021 levels [3].
Regional spikes are becoming more acute as demand grows. In Ohio, the projected average residential electric bill for this summer could reach $800 [5]. This represents a 17% increase compared with last year [6].
Butler said utilities are responding to consumer frustration over affordability while attempting to modernize a grid that was not designed for the current scale of AI computing. The intersection of extreme weather and high-density data centers creates a volatile environment for energy stability, one that requires significant capital investment to resolve.
