Farooq Abdullah, president of the National Conference, endorsed a call by RSS general-secretary Dattatreya Hosabale to initiate dialogue with Pakistan [1].
The endorsement marks a rare alignment between the former chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir and the leadership of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. This convergence suggests a potential shift toward diplomatic engagement in a region long defined by military tension and political stalemate.
Speaking in Srinagar on May 14, 2024 [1], Abdullah said diplomatic efforts are the only viable path forward for the region. He expressed support for Hosabale's stance on communication, noting that the time for conflict has passed.
"War is not a solution," Abdullah said [2].
Abdullah said to reporters that it is the right time to initiate talks with Pakistan [3]. He argued that people-to-people contact, and diplomatic engagement, are necessary to ease regional tensions and avoid armed conflict [4].
"Glad somebody is finally thinking war is not an option," he said [5].
The National Conference leader believes that renewed communication can stabilize the border and improve conditions for residents of Jammu & Kashmir. By backing the RSS leader, Abdullah highlighted a shared recognition that military escalation does not provide a permanent resolution to the territorial and political disputes between the two nations.
This public support for dialogue comes as regional dynamics continue to evolve, with various political actors weighing the costs of isolation against the potential benefits of negotiation. Abdullah's comments underscore a persistent demand within Kashmir for a diplomatic framework to replace the cycle of hostility.
“"War is not a solution,"”
The alignment between a prominent Kashmiri leader and the RSS on the necessity of dialogue indicates a widening consensus that military deterrence alone cannot resolve the Kashmir dispute. This shift may signal an opening for future diplomatic overtures, though any formal change in policy would require high-level government approval from New Delhi.
