Square Enix revealed the Bastion, the first new job for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV expansion Evercold, during the Berlin Fan Festival.
The introduction of a new tank class alters the game's combat dynamics by providing players with a fresh approach to damage mitigation and party protection. As a main-tank role, the Bastion is designed to anchor the front line of encounters, offering a new tactical layer to the game's established role system.
Producer and director Yoshi-P introduced the job in Berlin, Germany, and said the Bastion is a powerhouse that wields a pair of greatshields [1, 2]. This dual-shield combat style distinguishes the Bastion from previous tank roles in the franchise, emphasizing a defensive posture that does not sacrifice offensive presence [3].
The reveal follows earlier teasers from the Fan Festival in Anaheim this past April, where Square Enix said that two new jobs were on the way [1]. The Bastion serves as the first of these roles to be fully detailed for the community.
According to the official reveal, the Evercold expansion is scheduled for release in January 2027 [1, 4]. The expansion aims to expand the game's tank options and overall gameplay depth as the story progresses into its next major chapter [2, 3].
Trailers released alongside the announcement showcase the Bastion's abilities and visual effects, highlighting the physical impact of the dual-shield weaponry [4]. The developer said the role will integrate seamlessly into the existing ecosystem of jobs while providing a distinct identity for players who prefer the protector role.
“The Bastion is a main-tank that wields a pair of greatshields.”
The addition of the Bastion signals Square Enix's commitment to diversifying the tank role, which is often the most critical bottleneck in high-end raiding and dungeon content. By introducing a dual-shield mechanic, the developers are experimenting with weapon archetypes that deviate from the traditional sword-and-board or axe-and-shield setups, potentially shifting the meta for party composition in the 2027 expansion.
