Students in France are facing rising costs for rent, electricity, and transport, according to reports from the French National Union of Education Workers (UNEF).

This financial pressure threatens the accessibility of higher education, particularly for foreign students who are excluded from certain housing aid programs.

Data from the UNEF indicates that rents for students have increased by more than two% [1]. The overall cost of student life has risen by 1.66% [2], which represents an additional expense of €888 per student per year [3]. These figures contribute to a longer-term trend; the union said that the cost of student life has increased by 35% since 2017 [4].

Salomé Hocquard said, "Année par année, la précarité étudiante s'aggrave."

Regional disparities remain a significant factor in student affordability. Evry-Courcouronnes has been ranked as the ninth most expensive university city in France [6]. This ranking considers the combined costs of housing, food, and transportation.

For the current period, projections suggest a monthly residual charge of €1,300 for students [5]. This financial burden is driven by the simultaneous rise of basic necessities, including electricity and transport, alongside housing costs.

However, the Ministry of Higher Education has offered a different perspective. According to the ministry, the cost of the rentrée remains stable.

The discrepancy between the union's findings and the government's position highlights a divide in how student poverty is measured. While the ministry points to stability in certain entry costs, the UNEF emphasizes the cumulative effect of inflation on daily survival.

The cost of student life has increased by 35% since 2017

The conflict between UNEF data and Ministry of Higher Education claims suggests a gap between official cost-of-entry metrics and the actual cost of living. As basic utilities and rents climb, the financial barrier to entry for international students increases, potentially reducing France's competitiveness as a global education hub.
