G7 leaders pledged additional military aid for Ukraine and tighter sanctions on Russia's oil and gas sector during a summit in France.
This surge in support comes as leaders signal a shift in the conflict's momentum, potentially altering the strategic balance of the war. The decision to increase aid follows recent battlefield gains by Ukrainian forces.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined the leaders in Évian-les-Bains on June 13, 2024, for the second day of the summit. The group focused on boosting air-defense systems to protect Ukrainian infrastructure. EU leaders said to President Zelenskyy, "The tide is turning for Ukraine."
Prime Minister Mark Carney also addressed the shift in the conflict. "The tide is turning in the war," Carney said to President Zelenskyy.
U.S. President Donald Trump participated in the pledges to enhance air defenses. However, reports on his specific stance varied. While some accounts placed him among the countries pledging aid, other reports said President Trump suggested Russia should make a peace deal with Ukraine and indicated he had changed his position on the conflict.
During the summit, President Trump said to G7 leaders, "I'm the boss."
Leaders said that Ukraine's recent successes on the battlefield signaled a new momentum. This progress prompted the coalition to increase pressure on Russia through both military hardware, and economic restrictions on energy exports.
“"The tide is turning for Ukraine,"”
The G7's decision to escalate military aid and energy sanctions suggests a collective belief that Ukraine has reached a critical inflection point. By focusing on air-defense systems, the alliance aims to mitigate Russian aerial superiority, while the conflicting reports on President Trump's position highlight internal tensions regarding the long-term strategy for a negotiated peace versus continued military escalation.
