General Upendra Dwivedi has concluded his tenure as India's Chief of Army Staff, handing over command to General Dhiraj Seth today [3].
The transition marks the end of a leadership era for the Indian Army and highlights the growing professional military relationship between India and the U.S. through prestigious international honors.
During the handover ceremony in Delhi, Dwivedi reflected on a military career spanning over 40 years [1]. He said that serving in the Indian Army for four decades has been the greatest privilege of his life.
Dwivedi's retirement coincides with a significant international recognition. On April 24, 2026, he was inducted into the International Hall of Fame of the U.S. Army War College in Pennsylvania [2]. He is the third Indian Army chief to receive this honor [2].
"I am honoured to be inducted into the International Hall of Fame of the U.S. Army War College, joining two other Indian Army chiefs," Dwivedi said.
The outgoing chief expressed gratitude toward the nation, veterans, and the soldiers he led throughout his service. He also voiced his support for the new leadership during the transition period.
"I have full confidence in General Dhiraj Seth to lead the Indian Army into the future," Dwivedi said.
General Seth officially assumed command on June 30, 2026 [3]. The transition ensures continuity in the army's strategic direction as the new chief takes over the operational responsibilities of the headquarters in Delhi.
“"Serving in the Indian Army for four decades has been the greatest privilege of my life."”
The induction of General Dwivedi into the U.S. Army War College Hall of Fame underscores the strategic depth of the defense partnership between New Delhi and Washington. By recognizing the leadership of the third Indian Army chief in its history, the U.S. military institution signals a continuing commitment to interoperability and shared military doctrine with India.
