Emergency services and satellite monitoring teams continue to patrol the region. While the main front is no longer progressing, officials recorded 14 separate fire flare-ups on Tuesday [2]. These spot fires are fueled by a combination of very dry vegetation and temperatures exceeding 40°C [3].
The fire's progression accelerated starting July 22 [5], with the burned surface area tripling day after day. This rapid expansion was driven by dry winds and a severe heatwave. Beyond the immediate loss of land, the fires have created significant pollution spikes.
"The fine and ultrafine particles emitted during forest fires are very toxic due to their composition," the environment service of Le Monde said [6].
Recovery efforts for the affected regions are expected to be slow. Local industry and infrastructure will face a long road to restoration.
"When the situation is stabilized, the restart will take time," Marie-Laure Furgala said [7].
