Farmers in Goesan County have begun the seasonal harvest and sale of the region's specialty glutinous corn, known as '대학 찰옥수수' [1].
The harvest is a critical economic driver for the local agricultural community in North Chungcheong Province. Higher production volumes this year are expected to increase the overall income for farmers compared to the previous year [1].
The 2026 growing season presented several challenges for local growers. Farmers faced a significant spring drought and a rise in the cost of agricultural materials, both of which complicated the cultivation process [1].
Despite these early setbacks, the current crop conditions are favorable. The quality of the corn has remained high, allowing farmers to move forward with the harvest and anticipate a more profitable season [1].
Farmer 엄재학, who cultivates the specialty corn, said the early season was difficult. "There was a drought in the spring and agricultural material costs rose a lot, so there were difficulties, but separately from that, [we have] good quality..." he said [1].
The '대학 찰옥수수' variety is highly regarded in the region for its specific texture, and taste. By securing a successful harvest this July, Goesan farmers aim to stabilize their financial outlook for the remainder of the year [1].
“Higher production volumes this year are expected to increase the overall income for farmers”
The ability of Goesan farmers to overcome spring droughts and inflationary input costs suggests a resilient local agricultural infrastructure. If the expected increase in income materializes, it may offset the rising cost of farming materials that has pressured the region's agricultural margins.
