U.S. technology stocks have surged over the last two months due to robust artificial intelligence demand and strong corporate earnings [1].
This growth reflects a critical tension in the industry. While equity markets respond positively to AI infrastructure spending, the workforce is facing significant volatility as companies pivot their operational strategies.
Peter Callahan, a U.S. Technology, Media and Telecommunications sector specialist at Goldman Sachs, said these trends occurred in a recent interview. He said that large-scale capital commitments are primary catalysts for the current market move. A prominent example is Amazon's $200 billion investment in an AI build-out [5].
Individual company performance has also contributed to the momentum. Lumentum reported a year-over-year revenue growth of more than 85% [2]. The company provided revenue guidance for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 between $780 million and $830 million [1]. Additionally, Lumentum maintains an optical-circuit-switch backlog exceeding $400 million [3].
However, the stock market rally contrasts with a difficult labor market for tech workers. During the first quarter of 2026, 90 companies fired approximately 82,000 employees [4]. This represents the largest quarterly total of layoffs since early 2023 [4].
Callahan and interviewer Chris Hussey said where investors might find further opportunities as the sector continues to integrate AI. The current trend suggests that the market is prioritizing companies capable of monetizing AI capacity quickly, even if that transition requires streamlining their workforce [1, 5].
“U.S. technology stocks have surged over the last two months due to robust artificial intelligence demand.”
The divergence between soaring stock prices and rising layoffs suggests a structural shift in the technology sector. Companies are aggressively reallocating capital away from human labor and toward AI infrastructure to capture market share, meaning investor confidence is currently decoupled from employment stability.
