Google Maps now labels Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for users located in the United States [1, 2].
The change represents a shift in how federal geographic data is presented to the public and highlights a divergence in mapping between the U.S. and Canada.
The update appeared online in August 2026 [4]. According to company representatives, the change was made to align with the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) database [1].

The modification follows an executive order from President Donald Trump to rename U.S. geographic features to reflect “America” [1, 5]. While the U.S. version of the map has been updated, the Canadian version of Google Maps continues to show the body of water as Lake Ontario [1, 5].
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum confirmed that the administration is seeking similar changes from other technology providers. "President Trump has asked Apple to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America," said Burgum [3].
