Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri led the foundation stone ceremony for the Gorakhpur International Cricket Stadium.
The project aims to establish a world-class sports infrastructure in the region. By providing professional facilities, the government intends to boost the development of cricket and support youth athletes in Gorakhpur.
During the Bhoomi Poojan ceremony, the officials marked the start of Phase-I of the stadium's construction. The facility is designed with a seating capacity of 30,000 [1]. The development represents a significant expansion of sporting venues in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Funding for the project is provided by the Petroleum Ministry [1]. Adityanath said that the stadium is being developed with support from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas [2].
"The 30,000-seat stadium is funded by the Petroleum Ministry," Adityanath said [3].
The stadium is expected to serve as a hub for regional tournaments and potentially international fixtures. This investment in sports infrastructure is part of a broader effort to enhance athletic opportunities for the local population, creating a pipeline for talent to reach national levels.
“The 30,000-seat stadium is funded by the Petroleum Ministry.”
The construction of an international-standard stadium in Gorakhpur signals a strategic shift toward decentralizing sports infrastructure in India. By leveraging funding from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the project demonstrates a cross-ministerial approach to regional development, aiming to stimulate local economies through sports tourism and youth engagement.
