Game studio Another Axiom announced the expansion of Gorilla Tag to mobile and PC platforms during a presentation this week [1].
The move represents a significant shift for the title, transitioning a specialized virtual reality experience into more accessible formats to reach a wider global audience.
The announcement took place at GorillaCon, the first official Gorilla Tag convention, which was held within the larger VidCon event [1]. During the presentation, the studio revealed two new iterations of the franchise. The mobile version will be titled "Gorilla Tag: Monke Mayhem," while the version destined for PC and consoles will be called "Gorilla Tag: Contagion" [1].
Lemming, the creator of the game, said the expansion is intended to bring the VR experience to the masses. He said the goal is to inspire more curiosity about the space [1].
By diversifying the platforms, Another Axiom aims to remove the hardware barriers associated with high-end VR headsets. This strategy allows the studio to leverage the massive install base of smartphones and traditional gaming consoles, platforms that do not require the specific physical setup of a VR environment.
The studio did not provide specific release dates for either title during the GorillaCon event [1]. However, the introduction of these versions marks the first time the franchise has officially branched away from its VR-centric roots to embrace traditional gaming hardware.
“Gorilla Tag will expand to mobile and PC platforms with new titles”
This expansion indicates a strategic pivot by Another Axiom to decouple its intellectual property from the limitations of VR hardware. By launching 'Monke Mayhem' and 'Contagion,' the studio is attempting to convert a niche VR hit into a multi-platform franchise, potentially increasing user acquisition and revenue by targeting non-VR gamers.
