Gyoza no Manshu will suspend sales of its 12-piece chilled raw gyoza packs at Kanto region stores starting May 1 [1, 2].
The move highlights how shortages in petroleum-derived raw materials are forcing food retailers to alter product offerings and packaging strategies.
The company said the suspension is necessary to reduce the total volume of plastic trays used in its operations [1]. This decision comes as the chain faces a shortage of the petroleum-based materials required to manufacture the trays [1].
While the 12-piece chilled packs will be unavailable, the chain will continue to sell its 20-piece frozen raw gyoza packs in bags [1]. These bagged options do not rely on the same tray materials, and remain available to customers as a substitute.
Price adjustments have also been noted for specific promotions, with sale prices moving from 500 yen to 480 yen including tax [1]. The chain operates 103 directly managed stores [2].
The suspension affects stores across the Kanto region, where the brand has a significant presence [1]. The company said the change on April 30, with the suspension taking effect the following day [1, 2].

This suspension reflects a broader vulnerability in the food supply chain where reliance on petroleum-derived plastics creates operational risks. By shifting customers toward bagged frozen products, the company is attempting to mitigate raw material shortages while maintaining revenue streams through alternative packaging.
