Dr. Francoise Marvel, a physician at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, identified four primary ways these trackers aid heart health [1]. These include continuous heart-rate monitoring, the detection of irregular heart rhythms, the estimation of fitness levels or VO₂ max, and the provision of actionable insights regarding daily activity [1].
These tools have provided critical warnings for some users. For example, Maeve O’Neil, a 19-year-old [3] student, reported that her health tracker alerted her to a serious medical condition, illustrating the potential for wearables to trigger life-saving interventions [3].
However, medical experts emphasize a distinction between data tracking and clinical diagnosis. While some reports highlight how these devices save lives, other health guidelines state that trackers are not doctors and should not be used as a substitute for professional medical care.
