Showrunner Jacob Tierney said Season 2 of "Heated Rivalry" will feature higher stakes and more danger than the first installment.
The shift in tone suggests a departure from the initial dynamics of the series to explore deeper emotional conflict and mature themes. This evolution aims to align the show with the source material's progression.
Speaking at a BookCon 2026 panel, Tierney said the new season is set 10 years [1] after the events of the first installment. This time jump allows the production to move into what Tierney described as "much more serious territory" [2].
The upcoming narrative is based on "The Long Game" by author Rachel Reid. Tierney said the book is "an emotionally sophisticated book that takes this couple seriously" [3]. By adapting this specific material, the series intends to raise the stakes for the central couple, Shane Hollander, and Ilya Rozanov.
In addition to the time jump, the series will introduce a new character named Troy. Tierney said the new Troy character is "quite damaged" [4]. The introduction of this character is expected to provide new dramatic conflict for the established leads.
Tierney's comments indicate that the production will lean into the more complex emotional architecture of Reid's writing. The transition from the first season to the second involves a move toward a more mature exploration of the characters' relationship and their external pressures.
“"much more serious territory"”
The transition to a decade-later setting and the adaptation of 'The Long Game' indicates a strategic shift from the 'enemies-to-lovers' trope toward a study of long-term relationship sustainability. By introducing 'damaged' new characters and increasing the level of danger, the production is moving away from romantic comedy elements and toward a high-stakes emotional drama.
