Between 1,000 [1] and 1,800 [2] volunteers gathered on Sunday to manually pull the historic keep of Hirosaki Castle back toward its original position.
The event marks a critical step in restoring the landmark in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan, after a decade of structural repairs.
The castle keep, which weighs between 360 [2] and 400 tonnes [1], was originally moved in 2015 [3]. This relocation was necessary to repair damage to the stone walls that support the massive structure [3].
During the recent effort, the crowd used ropes to shift the building. While some reports indicate the keep was moved 78 metres [1], other data suggests the distance moved during this specific event was more than two metres [3].
The process requires extreme precision to ensure the historic architecture remains intact while shifting such immense weight. The volunteers worked in coordination to move the structure across the grounds of the castle site.
Hirosaki Castle is one of the few remaining original keeps in Japan. The effort to return it to its original site involves balancing modern engineering with traditional community participation, a hallmark of Japanese heritage preservation.
