Suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir has offered the vacant Rejinagar assembly seat to former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The offer represents a strategic attempt to facilitate Banerjee's return to the state's legislative body following her departure from the assembly. This gesture comes amid shifting political dynamics within the Trinamool Congress.
Kabir won two assembly seats in the most recent election [1]. Following those victories, he vacated the Rejinagar seat [1]. He said that if Banerjee approaches him, he will let her contest from that specific constituency [1].
Kabir said that Mamata Banerjee should be in the assembly and he is willing to help [2]. The offer is contingent on Banerjee contacting him to coordinate the move. This proposal follows a period of significant transition for the regional government, including the dissolution of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on May 7, 2024 [3].
Despite his current status as a suspended member of the party, Kabir said that the path to the Rejinagar seat remains open for the former leader. He said that the seat is available for her to reclaim her legislative presence in the state.
"If Mamata Banerjee approaches, I'll let her contest from Rejinagar," Kabir said [1].
“If Mamata Banerjee approaches, I'll let her contest from Rejinagar.”
This offer highlights the complex internal power dynamics and personal loyalties within the Trinamool Congress. By offering a vacated seat, Kabir is attempting to leverage his previous electoral success to regain favor or influence with the party's top leadership, while providing a potential legal and political mechanism for Banerjee to return to the legislature.
