Leaders of the INDIA opposition alliance met in New Delhi on Monday to coordinate a joint strategy against the BJP [1].
The meeting represents an effort to present a united front to address political, economic, social, and foreign-policy challenges attributed to the Modi government’s misgovernance [1, 2].
Gathering at the Constitution Club, the bloc included high-profile figures such as Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Mamata Banerjee [1, 3]. A total of 23 parties attended the session to strengthen opposition unity [1].
Despite the show of unity, several key players were absent. Reports indicate that the DMK and AAP skipped the meeting [3]. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) also did not attend the session [1, 3].
There were conflicting reports regarding the participation of the Shiv Sena (UBT). While some reports listed the party among those skipping the meeting, other sources highlighted the party's continued alignment with the bloc [3].
Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena (UBT) said there is no divide in the opposition alliance and TVK is an ‘alternative friend’ of the alliance [3].
The attendees aimed to chalk out a joint strategy to confront the ruling party across multiple fronts [2]. This coordination effort is intended to synchronize the opposition's response to current governance issues and prepare for future political challenges [1, 2].
“"There is no divide in the opposition alliance; TVK is an ‘alternative friend’ of the alliance."”
The gathering of 23 parties signals a significant attempt to formalize a cohesive opposition structure in India. However, the absence of major entities like the DMK and AAP, along with contradictions regarding Shiv Sena (UBT)'s attendance, suggests that while the bloc is numerically large, achieving total ideological and operational synchronization remains a challenge.
