Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy has requested an urgent investigation into the disappearance of 40 lakh tonnes of coal [1].
The alleged loss involves resources valued at approximately Rs 1,600 crore [1]. Because the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is a joint venture between the Telangana government and the central government, the discrepancy represents a significant financial and regulatory failure affecting both tiers of administration.
Reddy wrote to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy after seeing reports regarding the missing minerals. The minister said "a news item published across various newspapers relating to the disappearance of 40 lakh tonnes of coal worth Rs 1600 crore" was the basis for his request [1].
The SCCL operates under an equity split of 51:49 between the Telangana government and the Centre [2]. This ownership structure means any systemic irregularities or theft within the company impact the national treasury, as well as state coffers.
Political pressure for a transparent audit is mounting. K.T. Rama Rao, the Working President of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), has joined the call for accountability. "We demand an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the alleged disappearance of nearly 40 lakh tonnes of coal worth approximately Rs 1,600 crore," Rao said [3].
The scale of the missing coal—totaling 40 lakh tonnes [1]—suggests a potential breach in security or accounting at the mining sites. The Union Minister's formal correspondence to the Chief Minister signals that the central government views the matter as a priority for the state's executive leadership.
“40 lakh tonnes of coal worth Rs 1600 crore”
The friction between the central government and the state government of Telangana over the SCCL highlights the complexities of joint-venture public enterprises. A loss of this magnitude suggests either a massive failure in inventory management or organized theft, which could lead to broader political instability and calls for a total overhaul of coal auditing processes in the region.
