The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the Project Kusha long-range surface-to-air missile system.

The development of this indigenous shield aims to reduce India's reliance on imported military technology. By creating a domestic alternative to high-end foreign systems, India seeks to strengthen its multi-layered Sudarshan Chakra Shield.

The test took place off the coast of Odisha at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur [1]. During the operation, the system intercepted a simulated high-speed, high-altitude target [1]. This successful flight marks the first major milestone for the Project Kusha program.

Project Kusha is designed as a three-tier air-defence architecture [2]. This structure utilizes three different missile variants to engage threats at varying distances and altitudes [2]. According to technical specifications, the system is capable of a maximum interception range of 400 kilometers [3].

The initiative focuses on providing a comprehensive defensive umbrella against aerial threats. The DRDO said the system will provide a strategic deterrent by ensuring that high-altitude targets can be neutralized well before reaching their intended destinations.

While other recent tests have involved different systems, such as the Pinaka guided rocket, the Project Kusha flight specifically targets the long-range surface-to-air capability. The successful interception at the Odisha range confirms the viability of the current missile trajectory and sensor integration.
