Union Minister Gopi said Monday, July 20, 2026, that the government has not received substantiated complaints linking E20 petrol to fuel-pump issues, corrosion, or water contamination [1, 2]. He said that laboratory and field studies indicate the fuel does not cause abnormal wear-and-tear or major performance issues in legacy vehicles [2, 3].
While the government maintains the fuel is safe, officials acknowledged a slight decrease in fuel efficiency for older vehicle models. Government briefings reported a fuel-efficiency drop between two% and six% [7], while other government admissions estimated the reduction at three% to five% [5].
"We have not received any widespread or substantiated complaints linking E20 petrol to engine failures, fuel‑pump issues, corrosion, or water contamination," Gopi said [1].
The government's position is that the impact on older engines is minimal. A government spokesperson said E20 petrol may reduce mileage by up to five% in older vehicles, but it has not caused any widespread engine damage [4].
The clarification comes as India pushes for higher ethanol blending to reduce reliance on imported crude oil and lower carbon emissions. The transition to E20 requires vehicles to be compatible with higher ethanol concentrations to avoid long-term degradation of rubber seals and fuel lines, a concern the ministry says is not currently reflected in field data [1, 3].
