The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered repolling in all 285 [1] polling stations of the Falta Assembly constituency in West Bengal.
The decision follows reports of clashes between supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). The scale of the repoll reflects the commission's effort to maintain the integrity of the electoral process in a region prone to political volatility.
An Election Commission spokesperson said the poll body flagged "severe electoral offences and subversion of democratic process" during the initial polling in a large number of stations [2]. The spokesperson said the EC ordered the repoll after clashes between BJP and TMC supporters threatened the integrity of the election [3].
Fresh elections in all 285 [1] polling stations of Falta will be conducted between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on May 21, 2026 [4]. This ensures that the democratic mandate is recorded without the interference of the violence that marred the first attempt.
Following the repoll, the counting of votes for the constituency is scheduled for May 24, 2026 [5]. This delay means the final result for Falta will be announced after other constituencies in the region have likely concluded their processes.
The ECI maintains that the repoll is necessary to rectify the subversion of the democratic process [2]. The commission has not specified the exact nature of the electoral offences beyond the reported clashes between party supporters.
“The poll body flagged ‘severe electoral offences and subversion of democratic process’”
The decision to void votes across an entire constituency highlights the ongoing tension between the BJP and TMC in West Bengal. By ordering a total repoll rather than targeted booth corrections, the ECI is signaling a zero-tolerance approach to electoral violence to ensure the eventual winner has a legitimate, uncontested mandate.
