The price volatility stems from supply shortages. A delayed kharif crop and a late-rabi crop in Maharashtra that was damaged by weather have reduced the available stock [1, 3, 5]. This supply gap has forced the government to intervene to prevent further inflation during the peak demand months of September and October [3].
To combat the price pinch, the central government plans to release onions from its buffer stock starting in September [3]. This move is intended to bridge the supply gap and stabilize the market before the festive rush begins [3].
In addition to releasing buffer stocks, the government intends to provide direct relief to consumers. The Centre plans to sell onions at a subsidized rate of Rs 35 per kilogram through mobile vans [4, 5].
