Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, India’s first privately built orbital rocket, on Saturday, July 18 [1].
The achievement marks a transition for the Indian space sector, moving from state-led dominance toward a competitive commercial market. By establishing private launch capabilities, India aims to capture a larger share of the global commercial satellite launch industry [2].
The rocket launched from an island spaceport in the Bay of Bengal [1]. An unnamed Indian space official said the mission was a success, as the vehicle placed its payload into a 280-mile-high orbit on schedule [3]. This altitude is approximately 450 km [3].
Skyroot Aerospace is led by CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana and co-founder and COO Naga Bharath Daka [1]. The company designed the Vikram-1 to demonstrate that private entities in India can develop and operate orbital-class launch vehicles [2].
"We are thrilled to demonstrate India’s first private orbital launch capability and to open a new chapter for the country’s space sector," Daka said [1].
Chandana focused on the long-term economic goals of the venture. "Our vision is to make space more accessible and to build a sustainable commercial launch business for India," Chandana said [4].
The mission represents the first time a private Indian company has successfully reached orbit [5]. The success of the Vikram-1 provides a blueprint for other domestic startups to enter the launch market — a move that could reduce costs for satellite deployment within the region.

The successful orbit of Vikram-1 signals the end of the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) monopoly on orbital launches.
