India has approved the first module of the Bharatiya Antariksha Space Station, marking a primary step toward an independent orbital presence.
The development of a sovereign space station allows India to conduct long-term research without relying on foreign facilities. This infrastructure is designed to boost national capabilities and support existing initiatives such as the Gaganyaan program.
Dr. V. Narayanan, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), said the approval during the third National Space Day celebrations in Ahmedabad [3]. The agency has set a target to have the space station fully operational by 2035 [1].
The project represents a strategic shift for the agency as it moves from short-term crewed missions to permanent habitation in low Earth orbit. The approved module serves as the foundation for the station's assembly, a process that will require multiple launches and complex docking maneuvers.
Beyond the government-led station, the Indian space ecosystem is expanding through private sector growth. Narayanan said that 400 space startups are currently creating new career opportunities for young engineers [2]. This synergy between ISRO and private enterprises is expected to accelerate the technical milestones required for the 2035 deadline.
The announcement comes as India seeks to solidify its position among the few nations capable of maintaining an independent presence in space. By integrating startup innovation with state-led goals, the agency aims to reduce costs and increase the pace of module deployment.
