Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the elevation of India-Italy relations to a Special Strategic Partnership on May 19, 2024.
This upgrade signals a shift toward deeper institutional cooperation between the two nations, aiming to synchronize their economic and security interests in a volatile global landscape.
During a joint press conference in Rome, the leaders outlined a roadmap for cooperation across several key sectors. The agreement focuses on defence, trade, technology, clean energy, connectivity, and innovation [1, 2]. The partnership is designed to create a structured framework for bilateral growth and shared technological advancement.
"We are delighted to elevate our relationship to a Special Strategic Partnership," Modi said [3].
Meloni said that Italy and India will cooperate closely in defence, trade, clean energy, and technology [4]. The leaders indicated that the new status would facilitate faster decision-making and more integrated industrial ties.
Modi's visit to Italy was part of a five-nation tour [5]. The bilateral talks in Rome served as a centerpiece of the trip, reflecting a mutual desire to move beyond traditional diplomatic ties and establish a more robust strategic alignment.
"This partnership will create new opportunities for our peoples and economies," Modi said [3].
The agreement comes as both nations seek to diversify their supply chains and enhance energy security. By focusing on clean energy and innovation, the two countries aim to reduce dependencies on singular markets, a move that aligns with broader geopolitical trends toward strategic autonomy.
