India launched Mission Senehjori in Delhi on June 2, 2024, to strengthen the Muga silk industry in Assam [3].
The initiative aims to transition a traditional craft into a globally competitive luxury ecosystem. By strengthening the value chain, the government intends to create new jobs and improve the livelihoods of farmers and weavers who sustain the industry.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma joined Union Ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sukanta Majumdar for the unveiling of the program. The mission focuses on making Muga silk a recognized global brand by enhancing production and marketing capabilities.
Financial investments for the project are estimated between ₹400 crore [1] and ₹411 crore [2]. This funding is intended to modernize the sector and provide a structured support system for the regional economy.
The government expects the program to benefit nearly 200,000 people [4]. These beneficiaries include the local farmers and weavers who are central to the production of the golden silk unique to the region.
Mission Senehjori seeks to address systemic gaps in the supply chain. By integrating modern luxury branding with traditional weaving techniques, the government hopes to increase the market value of the silk, and ensure sustainable income for rural artisans.
“The government initiative invests over ₹400 crore to transform the Muga silk sector into a global luxury brand.”
The launch of Mission Senehjori represents a strategic shift toward 'luxury branding' for regional Indian crafts. By injecting significant capital into the Muga silk value chain, the government is attempting to move beyond local artisanal production to capture a share of the international high-end textile market, which could stabilize rural incomes in Assam.
