The current 2026 monsoon season, which runs from June through September, is being shaped by an El Niño-driven climate pattern. This phenomenon is expected to produce below-normal rainfall [2] and erratic behavior across the region. The resulting "yo-yo" effect creates a cycle of drought and flooding that stresses both the land and the infrastructure.
Agriculture in India is particularly vulnerable to these shifts. Approximately 50% of the country's farmland depends on rainfall for irrigation [1]. When rains fail or arrive in violent bursts, the stability of these rain-fed agricultural regions is compromised, risking the output of essential crops.
Beyond the fields, the weather pattern is placing significant strain on the national power grid. The lack of consistent rain increases the demand for electricity to power irrigation pumps as farmers struggle to water their crops. Simultaneously, rising temperatures associated with these climate patterns drive up the demand for cooling systems.
Weather forecasting agency Skymet said it has predicted below-normal rainfall for the 2026 season [2]. This forecast underscores the risk of a prolonged agricultural deficit if the erratic patterns persist through the end of the monsoon cycle.
