India's Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan announced major changes to the NEET UG 2026 examination following a recent paper-leak scandal.
The scandal has sparked nationwide anger among students, threatening the integrity of one of the country's most competitive medical entrance exams. Pradhan said during a press conference that the government plans to restore trust in the testing process.
Pradhan pledged to hold the perpetrators accountable for the leak. He said, "दोषियों को पाताल से भी ढूंढ निकालेंगे," which translates to a vow that the culprits will be found even if they are hidden in the depths of the earth.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued updated administrative details for the 2026 cycle. The online registration deadline was extended to March 11, 2026 [1].
There are conflicting reports regarding the specific date of the examination. Some reports indicate the exam was scheduled for May 3, 2026 [2], with a single-shift timing from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. [2]. However, other coverage states that students will attempt the exam again on June 21, 2026 [3].
These adjustments come as the government attempts to mitigate the fallout from the leak. The minister said the upcoming tests will involve significant structural changes to prevent further security compromises, a move intended to ensure a fair playing field for all candidates.
Pradhan said the government is committed to a transparent process. The NTA continues to update its portal with admit card information and hall ticket links as the revised dates approach [2].
“"दोषियों को पाताल से भी ढूंढ निकालेंगे।"”
The contradiction in exam dates suggests a volatile rescheduling process as the NTA reacts to security failures. By promising aggressive prosecution of leakers and extending registration, the Indian government is attempting to balance administrative urgency with the need to regain public confidence in the meritocratic nature of the medical admissions process.
