Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination will take place on June 21, 2026 [1].
The decision follows a major security failure that compromised the integrity of the medical entrance exam, affecting thousands of aspiring students across India. This shift aims to restore public trust in the national testing system after a high-profile scandal.
The original NEET-UG exam was cancelled on May 3, 2026 [2]. This cancellation occurred after reports of a paper leak surfaced, prompting the National Testing Agency to void the previous results to ensure a fair playing field for all candidates.
Pradhan spoke at a press conference in New Delhi following the NTA announcement. He said the government is implementing reforms to improve security and monitoring during the examination process. These measures are intended to prevent future leaks and ensure the transparency of the selection process.
As part of these long-term reforms, the minister said that the NEET exam will transition to a computer-based format starting in 2027 [1]. The move to digital testing is designed to reduce the risks associated with physical paper transport and distribution, a vulnerability that led to the recent crisis.
While the 2026 re-examination will maintain the current format, the transition next year represents a fundamental change in how India conducts its most competitive medical entrance tests. The government said the computer-based system will allow for better oversight and more secure delivery of exam content [1].
“The NEET-UG 2026 re-examination will take place on 21 June 2026.”
The transition to computer-based testing marks a strategic pivot by the Indian government to eliminate the physical vulnerabilities of paper-based exams. By digitizing the process, the NTA seeks to minimize the window of opportunity for paper leaks, though it will require a significant scaling of digital infrastructure to accommodate the massive volume of NEET candidates nationwide.
