Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on May 15, 2026 [3], that a re-examination for the NEET UG 2026 will be held on June 21, 2026 [2].
The decision follows the cancellation of the original exam held on May 3, 2026 [1], after allegations of a paper leak surfaced. This move is critical as it affects thousands of medical aspirants and highlights significant vulnerabilities in India's national testing infrastructure.
Pradhan said the government is taking these steps to protect genuine students from the fallout of the leak. He said, "Genuine students will not suffer."
To address the systemic weaknesses of the National Testing Agency (NTA), the ministry has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the leak. Pradhan said the NTA needs reform to prevent such breaches from recurring in the future.
As part of these reforms, the government will transition the examination process to a fully computer-based format starting in 2027 [4]. This shift aims to reduce the risks associated with physical paper distribution and leakage, a recurring problem for high-stakes exams in the country.
The minister chaired a key meeting in New Delhi to finalize the schedule and ensure the integrity of the upcoming test. The NTA is now tasked with implementing the new schedule and coordinating with centers to facilitate the June 21 date [2].
Students who appeared for the May 3 test are expected to be eligible for the fresh examination. The ministry has not yet released the full detailed schedule for admit card distribution, but the June 21 date remains the primary deadline for the re-test [3].

The transition to computer-based testing by 2027 represents a fundamental shift in how India manages large-scale competitive exams. By removing the physical paper trail, the government intends to eliminate the primary vector for leaks, though this will require a massive scaling of digital infrastructure and secure testing centers across rural and urban regions.
