India and New Zealand have agreed to establish a Joint Working Group to combat terrorism following a meeting in Auckland on Saturday [1].
The agreement signals a deepening security alignment between the two nations as they seek to stabilize the Indo-Pacific region and push for systemic reforms within the United Nations [1, 2].
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the initiative during a gala lunch hosted by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon [1]. The move is part of a broader effort to strengthen cooperation against global terror threats and ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific [1].
"We will move forward shoulder to shoulder on the issue of terrorism," Modi said [1].
The visit has resulted in a significant expansion of diplomatic and economic ties. The two countries have elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership, signing 18 agreements during the visit [2]. These accords span multiple sectors, aiming to synchronize policy, and security goals across the southern hemisphere.
Economic cooperation is also a primary focus of the new partnership. The two leaders have set a target to double bilateral trade by 2030 [2]. This growth is expected to be supported by the newly signed agreements and increased diplomatic engagement.
Beyond security and trade, both leaders called for the reform of global institutions. They specifically highlighted the need for updates to the United Nations to better reflect current geopolitical realities [1, 2]. This joint call for reform suggests a shared vision for a more equitable international governance structure.
“"We will move forward shoulder to shoulder on the issue of terrorism,"”
The creation of the Joint Working Group and the elevation to a strategic partnership indicate that India is successfully expanding its security architecture in the Indo-Pacific. By aligning with New Zealand on counter-terrorism and UN reform, India is leveraging mid-sized powers to challenge the existing global order and create a more diversified network of security partners to balance regional influence.
