Individuals seeking to operate motor vehicles on Indian roads can now apply for driving licences through the government's online Parivahan system.
This digital transition streamlines a mandatory legal requirement under the Motor Vehicles Act [1], reducing the administrative burden on both citizens and government offices.
The process begins with the application for a Learner’s Licence via the Parivahan portal. According to the MSN editorial team, applicants need to enter personal details, submit the required documents, pay the prescribed fee, and book a test slot.
Once the Learner’s Licence is issued, the applicant must complete a mandatory learner period. This waiting period is commonly 30 days before the individual is eligible to apply for a permanent Driving Licence.
After the learner period expires, the applicant returns to the Parivahan system to request a permanent licence. This stage requires the individual to book a driving test appointment and appear in person at their designated Regional Transport Office (RTO) for the practical examination.
