This surge in automated traffic threatens the fairness of the ticketing system, as unauthorized agents use bots to snap up high-demand tickets before genuine passengers can access them. This practice often leads to the resale of tickets at inflated prices, particularly for the Tatkal emergency booking service.
Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the figures Wednesday during a session of the Lok Sabha in New Delhi [1, 2]. The ministry reported that the system recorded an average of 888 crore [1] booking requests during this period.
The prevalence of these bots creates a significant barrier for travelers attempting to secure seats through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) system. By automating the purchase process, agents can bypass the manual entry time required by human users—effectively locking out the general public from available inventory.
Vaishnaw said the ministry is taking action to curb the use of these automated tools [2]. The effort focuses on identifying and blocking the technical pathways that allow bots to interact with the booking interface, aiming to restore equitable access to the rail network.
While the ministry has not detailed the specific technical countermeasures, the focus remains on the Tatkal window, where the speed of booking is critical.
