Data on the number of stations lacking these facilities varied slightly across reports. One source said that 89% of the audited sites lacked essential amenities [1], while another reported that 458 out of 512 stations failed to provide basic facilities [3].
The presence of E. coli indicates that the water supply was contaminated with fecal matter, which can lead to severe gastrointestinal illnesses. The CAG said these hygiene failures were a critical lapse in maintaining passenger safety and health standards across the rail network [1, 2].
Railway authorities have not yet detailed specific remediation timelines for the 458 stations lacking basic infrastructure [3]. The report emphasizes that the lack of basic facilities persists despite the high volume of traffic these stations handle daily.
