India and the United Arab Emirates signed several agreements on defence, energy, and technology during a visit to Abu Dhabi on May 15, 2024 [1].
These pacts strengthen the strategic ties between the two nations as they seek to enhance regional security and economic stability through diversified investments. The cooperation targets critical infrastructure and the integration of advanced technologies into their respective economies.
The agreements cover a broad spectrum of cooperation, including a strategic defence partnership and energy security. The two countries also focused on maritime cooperation and trade, alongside investments in financial institutions and infrastructure [1].
Beyond traditional industry, the partnership extends into emerging technologies. The deals include collaborations on artificial intelligence and supercomputing to modernize digital capabilities in both nations [1].
As part of the diplomatic exchange, the UAE announced an investment of $5 billion in India [2]. The scale of the financial commitment underscores the UAE's role as a primary economic partner for India in the Middle East.
The diplomatic engagement was characterized by its efficiency. Prime Minister Modi landed, signed the key deals, and departed the UAE within a two-hour window [3].
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri described the current state of the relationship. "The partnership has deepened significantly across key sectors including energy security, trade, investment, defence, maritime cooperation, and emerging technologies such as AI and supercomputing," Misri said [4].
“The UAE announced an investment of $5 billion in India.”
The rapid execution of these agreements signals a high level of pre-existing diplomatic alignment between New Delhi and Abu Dhabi. By linking energy security with emerging tech like AI, India is securing both its traditional resource needs and its future technological ambitions, while the UAE solidifies its position as a strategic gateway for Indian capital and security interests in the Gulf.
