India told the United Nations on Wednesday that the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir is strictly an internal matter for the country.
This diplomatic confrontation underscores the persistent tension between India and Pakistan over territorial sovereignty, signaling that India will not accept international mediation or questioning regarding the region's status.
Harish Parvathaneni, the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, made the statements during a UN Security Council Arria-formula meeting in New York [1, 2]. The exchange followed remarks from Pakistan questioning India's position on Jammu and Kashmir [1, 2].
"Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir is a matter strictly internal to India, it has always been and will remain so," Parvathaneni said [3]. He said that the region is strictly an internal matter [4].
Parvathaneni also criticized the conduct of the meeting's co-chair. He said, "It is incredible that a co-chair expected to be balanced and unbiased in conduct has chosen to politicize this forum" [1].
This incident is part of a broader trend of escalating diplomatic friction between the two nations. Reports indicate that India has responded four times in four weeks to Pakistan's remarks concerning Jammu and Kashmir [5].
India's stance remains consistent in its rejection of external interference in the administration of the union territory. The Arria-formula meeting, an informal gathering used by Security Council members, served as the latest venue for this disagreement.
“"Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir is a matter strictly internal to India, it has always been and will remain so."”
The repetition of this rhetoric at the UN Security Council indicates a hardening of India's diplomatic posture. By specifically criticizing the impartiality of the meeting's co-chair, India is not only challenging Pakistan's claims but also questioning the neutrality of the international frameworks used to discuss the dispute.
