The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) are building a fast prototype of the Zorawar light tank.

This development aims to provide the Indian Army with a specialized vehicle capable of operating in the challenging terrain of the northern border region. Because standard heavy tanks struggle with altitude and accessibility, a lighter, air-transportable option is required for strategic mobility in high-altitude environments.

The Zorawar is designed as a 25-tonne vehicle [1]. Its specifications include amphibious capabilities, allowing it to navigate diverse terrains, and water crossings during deployment. The project focuses on creating a platform that can be quickly transported to the border to counter regional security threats.

Gen. Upendra Dwivedi said, "We will induct the Zorawar light tank in 2028‑29" [2].

The tank is specifically engineered for the northern border, where the geography demands a balance between firepower and weight. By utilizing a lighter chassis, the military can deploy the vehicles via aircraft, reducing the time required to reinforce positions in remote areas.

According to the Press Information Bureau, the DRDO is developing the 25-tonne 'Zorawar' light tank to operate in India's northern border region [1]. The collaboration with L&T facilitates the rapid prototyping phase to ensure the vehicle meets operational requirements before full-scale production begins.

We will induct the Zorawar light tank in 2028‑29.

The development of the Zorawar represents a shift toward niche capabilities for India's armored corps. By prioritizing air-transportability and a lower weight profile, India is addressing a specific tactical gap in high-altitude warfare where traditional main battle tanks are often impractical due to weight and logistics.
