Thousands of residents in Gary and northwest Indiana remain without electricity nearly two weeks after severe storms knocked trees onto power lines [1, 2].

Estimates of the remaining outages vary. One report from Aug. 22 listed 33,124 residents without power [2], while another source reported approximately 10,000 customers remained affected as of Monday [3].
The crisis has sparked legal action. A class-action lawsuit alleges the utility failed to proactively trim trees, which led to the widespread failures when the storms hit early this month [1, 7].
The mayor of Gary said 12 days is "too long" for residents to go without power [1]. The duration of the blackout has pushed many to their limits.
One Gary resident said people have been living in "survival mode" [4].
Utility crews continue to work in the region to repair downed lines and clear debris. However, the delay in restoration has intensified scrutiny of the provider's infrastructure maintenance, and emergency response protocols [1, 7].
