IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said the airline is launching the most significant international expansion in its history to mark its 20th anniversary.
This strategic pivot signals a shift from a domestic low-cost carrier to a global competitor. By targeting premium travel and long-haul routes, IndiGo aims to challenge the world's largest airlines while leveraging its dominant position in the Indian market.
Bhatia discussed the airline's trajectory during an interview with CNBC TV18. He said the company is focused on "taking Indians to the world and bringing the diaspora home." This goal aligns with the airline's ambition to establish itself as a national champion capable of competing on a global scale.
The expansion comes as IndiGo celebrates two decades of operations. The airline's first flight took place on Aug. 4, 2006 [2], meaning the company turns 20 years old next week [2].
IndiGo currently holds over 60% of the Indian domestic airline market share [3]. Bhatia said this domestic strength provides the foundation for the next decade of growth, a period he described as the most significant phase of international expansion in the company's history.
Beyond increasing flight frequency, the airline is betting on premium travel services. This move is intended to capture a broader segment of travelers as the Indian middle and upper class seek more luxury options for international transit.
Bhatia said the move is about more than just growth. He described the effort as a way to create a carrier that can represent India's aviation capabilities on the world stage.
“We are entering the most significant phase of international expansion in our history.”
IndiGo's transition from a budget-focused domestic leader to a premium international player reflects the growing economic power of the Indian traveler. By diversifying its service tiers and expanding its global footprint, the airline is attempting to break the monopoly that legacy carriers have held over long-haul, high-yield routes from India.
